Red Hat Girl - There is usually a crowd of a dozen or two women all sporting bright red hats. We have all seen those Red Hat groups gathered together at some restaurant, or restaurant / bistro combination, laughing and seemingly the happiest people in the room. They have a great time. My wife, although this painting is not her, enjoys the dinners out with her Red Hat group when she is able to go. Sometimes she has to miss their monthly get-to-gethers and stay home due to medical reasons. I know she misses them. Your comments are welcome.

Butterfly No. 1 - Another new challenge; great color and yet delicate and a new subject matter. I think the principals are the same, contrast, light the proper values and composition. I don't know if everything is 100% here, but I think I got it close. Your comments are welcomed.

MoonLight - I saw a movie a month or more ago that prompted me to schedual this painting. In the movie the electrical power had failed and there was a full moon. It reflected off the actors faces much like this likeness. The play of lights and darks was moving. I hope this piece is too. Your comments are welcomed.

Russell Baker - Charles X. Carlson - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel
NOT FOR SALE
I used a 1945 black and white photo as a reference for this painting
Charles X. Carlson - Artist, Author (1902-1991)
C. X. Carlson, born in Minnesota in 1902, left school in the seventh grade at 12 years of age to become a baker's apprentice. He later worked in iron mines, lumber camps, and as a seaman for three years.
Soon his talent for art drew him the Crane Technical College in Chicago and to the Chicago Art Institute, where he spent four years. Later he attended the National Academy of Design in New York for three years and the Art Students League in New York. He traveled to Antwerp and Munich and also studied under master artists. While in New York he met and studied with Gorkey, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.
He taught art classes in figure study at the Art Student League. Locally he also taught classes at the York Art Association, the Jewish Community Center, and the Iris Club. He started the Octorara Art Association. The Octorara Art Association web site address is:
His experience as an illustrator, cartoonist, mural painter, and teacher in New York City captured the attention of other artists and designers. He painted murals in the New Zealand building of the New York's World's Fair. He created Elsie, the Borden Company's cow. He also did work for Ford and General Motors.
His impact continued in the political arena during World War II. He was a staff artist and cartoonist for "On War Times," a publication of the Pentagon and the Bureau of Public Relations. He spent two years painting, lecturing, and exhibiting in twenty-one American Republics and South American countries for the U.S. State Department for the Good Neighbor Policy. While in South America he completed more than 750 paintings as well as research for a book, which was never published.
He is the author of a series of twenty art illustration books that sold millions of copies. He was commissioned to illustrate "Old Lancaster" and completed over 150 paintings of historical Lancaster buildings. Critics believe this series to be his finest works.
During his lifetime he exhibited widely throughout the Americas. His paintings hang in well-known collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art In New York. He is listed in Who's Who in Art and Who's Who in the East.
C.X. moved to Lancaster county, PA in 1947 and in lived in Kirk's Mill near Quarryville. There he became a historical painter. He completed in his lifetime more than 15,000 paintings and uncountable drawings for friends, relatives, neighbors, and members of the art world.
To me, he was just my uncle Charlie.

Homeless Man No. 2 - I've taken a little creative license here and put together two different homeless subjects, both recently photographed on the streets of Sacramento, CA. One was a black man sitting on a bench catching some warm sun and the other was an older balding white man; both men appeared extremely tired. Recently I painted another older man with similar lighting and called it Memories. Your comments are welcome.

Run Free - This my first attempt at this type of subject. The anatomy alone was a real learning process and a challenge. Since it was my first horse painting I wanted to try something a little different here in nature and color, therefore only having to please myself, and this is what I came up with. Bean Farmer - It was about 20 or so years ago, back when I traveled all the US to make a living. I stopped for lunch at a small café in Santa Rosa, NM. I struck up a conversation with him, but all I can remember is that he wore a large brimmed western hat and had a weather worn face. Since I could not remember his face well enough to reconstruct, I used some of the features of a friend here in California. I like the way it came out. Your comments are welcome.

Homeless Woman - I've put together another imaginary person from several of what appeared to be homeless subjects I observed last Saturday in mid town Sacramento, CA. The homeless, like Native Americans, have sometimes almost unimaginable character in their rugged faces. I love the challenge of capturing that character on canvas. This is also my first attempt at painting a person of African American decent. I tried to master the skin tones on another canvas prior to starting this painting. I'd be interested in your comments. Thanks.

Old Brave in Minnesota Winter - I grew up in northern Minnesota, that's why. Senior citizens have so much character in their faces. Painting them is interesting, fun and rewarding if you get it to look right. I think finally I did here. I'd appreciate your comments. Incidentally, if you do recognize the eyes in this one you get a gold star too.

Tribal Chief - This one taught me a number of new lessons which hopefully I won't repeat on the next one of this type, I had to do a few corrections along the way. If you take a close look at the eyes and mouth you may recognize them as taken from a photo of one of my favorite, and now deceased, country music stars. I'll give a gold star to the first person who comes up with the correct answer. Your comments are welcome.

Russell Baker - Boxed Kitten - Oil 8 x 8 Canvas Panel
SOLD
Kitten in Box - This was an enjoyable painting to do as I've raised many kittens in my lifetime. Some could while away hours in and around a milk carton or paper bag. I can't count the hours of laughs I've over the years just watching them play. Possibly you've had a similar experience. Your comments are encouraged and welcomed.

Russell Baker - CHAMPION PIPERS WILL POWER - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel
CHAMPION PIPERS WILL POWER - or "Will" for short. Will is a champion Whippet and I'm sure he is the pride of his owners. The owner of the website featured Will on page http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/puppies1/p3.html and gave me permission to use any of the images available there. Will struck me as an extremely self-confident dog even at his age. You can check out Will or any of the other champion dogs at that website also. Your comments are welcome.....

Russell Baker - Opal - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel
SOLD 6/17/2008
Opal - We adopted Opal in about 1996. She was sitting up on the spa having a conversation with me while I soaked when she spotted a bird. I hope I've captured the expression correctly. Who says you can't paint expressions on animal's faces. Opal disappeared mysteriously about a year after we got her. It's to bad as she was really cute. Your comments are welcome.

Longhaired Dachshund - You will see this Dauxie frequently at our local coffee shop in Sacramento. Although I've never spoken to the people that bring her, I don't think they would mind my using her for a model for this 8 x 10 Oil. In the past I've tried painting a couple of Dachshunds. One came out great and the other not so good. I'd like your opinions on this one if you would. Your comments are always welcome.

Portrait Study1 - To consider yourself a painter you should be able to do most any type of study or painting even though you have your favorite type. I have done some portrait pieces in the past and decided to try some again as I was recently asked if I could do a head shot. I found this exercise in a book purchased months ago and then put aside. Some of you may recognize it although I have taken some creative license. Your comments are welcome.

Recently I found out that the Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, now it all makes sense. Alga has been gone for many years now, but I will always remember her smiling face when describing the Havanese. Your comments are welcome.

The Alaskan Brown - Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted any new paintings for about two weeks. We have been on a cruise ship in Alaska, Glacier Bay and 4 ports of call. The day at Glacier Bay was enhanced with several hours of bright sunshine starting just as we arrived at the north end. The scenery was spectacular, lots of wild life and of course the glaciers too. I thought I should paint something reminiscent of that day so here is my impression of an Alaskan Brown Bear. Hope you like it. Your comments are encouraged and always welcome.

Marvin No. 2 - I saw Marvin, an elderly Chow, at the coffee shop once again on Thursday. He suffers from arthritis and his owner said his eye site is also getting poor. I decided it was time paint another Chow. These dogs have the most expressive faces and because of that, they make great painting subjects. The second picture is a detail of Marvin's eye. I just thought the close up was interesting. Your comments are welcome..

Coco - Coco was a Mini Poodle that 45 or more years ago belonged to my good friend Larry L. Larry, was the uncontested world champion at his profession for about 4 years. He did TV and personal appearances all over the USA and other parts of the world. Over several years he and I had two partnerships and even worked some state fairs together. What fun! Coco is long gone now and I just recently heard that Larry has also left us. Your comments are welcome.

Mystic Morning - I wanted to do something apart from animals for a change so I poured a cup, got a muffin and sat in front of my easel. About two hours later I looked up and noticed I hadn't touched my coffee or muffin. I think that's what it's all about for me. Painting takes me to a place where everything else leaves my mind and I can relax. The painting itself is secondary to the action; I hope you understand. I painted this to appear mystical and fantasy like while trying some different from the norm colors and techniques. Your comments are welcome.

Nora The Sheltie - I keep seeing this Sheltie leading it's owner down the sidewalk by our local coffee shop here in Sacramento. It reminds me of 40 plus years ago when I lived in Wichita, KS and my friend Ed H. (now deceased). He owned this split window 63 Corvette (you car lovers know what I mean). He and his dog Nora, a Sheltie, would pull into our local drive in restaurant and everyone would watch as they parked. Nora, and I think the Corvette too, would attract a lot of the local girls. What a great dog she was. Your comments are welcome.

Judy's Pomeranian - This one lived in Colorado many years ago and it is painted from memory. When I would visit their home we would sit up till all hours of the night talking and laughing. Tibetan Spaniel - These Dogs were highly prized in ancient Tibet, and were often given as gifts to royal houses. Depictions of dogs similar to the Tibetan Spaniels have been found on Chinese bronzes from as early as 1100 BC. I personally just think they're cute! Your comments are welcome.

Russell Baker - The Hunter - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel
Sold 4/7/2008
The Hunter - Hunting in tall grass. Those of you interested in photography will understand what I've attempted to do here. For those of you who don't, I've pictured "The Hunter" in a supposed narrowed the depth of field. Having never tried this before with oil paints, it was a real challenge compared to doing it with a camera. The challenge was to blur the foreground while leaving the background or face crystal clear and still show some of the image through the blurred area, much like the camera would do. I learned a lot here and will apply that knowledge to the next one of this type I try. Your comments are welcome.

Esther's Friend - I just love doing these small dogs. They have such expressive faces and great personalities, however white ones are hard to do. Just to show expression, dimension, perspective and depth within a white furry face requires a lot of subtle tone changes. I'll wait for your comments to let me know if I've been successful in making her look alive and vibrant.

Gooseberry Falls -If you have never been up the Lake Superior north shore in Minnesota you should do it once in your lifetime. I was lucky enough to do it many times as a child and remember it vividly to this day. It's now been about 50 years since I had the opportunity to stop and climb down the rocks near Gooseberry Falls, although I've been past it in recent years. So if I may present a painting strictly from memory of that day some 50 years ago here is Gooseberry Falls, MN.

Seascape Exercise #1- I got this new book on how master some different techniques. This is the first exercise I've tried. I wanted to learn more about painting water and showing real depth within a painting. I really enjoyed doing this one, as it was a real deviation from the past few months. I totally enjoy the animals and birds I normally paint, but wanted to learn more and grow. Life is more interesting when you are learning something new. Your comments are welcome.

Its Nap Time - Every time I paint one of these kittens and then sit back and look at it I feel very relaxed. It's a phenomenon that doesn't occur with other paintings I do, just the kittens, especially the sleeping kittens. The softer they look the more relaxed I feel. I'll probably keep painting them and just for ducks, I'm going to check my blood pressure to see if the phenomenon actually extends to my BP number.

Homer - His new owner brought him home, from sure death at the pound, to a loving environment just yesterday. I was lucky enough to meet him and immediately noticed that he seemed to stair at me forever. Possibly it was the sound of my voice or just a male voice that interested him, but he wouldn't take his eyes off me so I took a couple of pictures and today put him on canvas. Homer is about 8 or so weeks old and very fluffy. Your comments are welcome.

The Pekingese - or at least "a Pekingese". Two or three months ago in one of my posts I asked that if anyone out there had a good picture of a Pekingese would they please email it to me. Well, I got a number of them and this is a combination of several of the best close-ups. Thank all of you who sent me those pictures. That effort, along with a little on my part, culminated in this painting. I welcome any comments....

Maxine - She was a large old dog that I knew many years ago, I think a golden retriever mix. It seemed like every time I saw her she was laying on the couch and when I came in she would open an eye to check me out and then back to sleep. I ran across a picture of her and her owner last evening and made the decision to try this painting from memory. I think it turned out well. I'd welcome any comments.

Keel Billed Toucan - The Keel-billed toucans are a very social bird and can often be seen in flocks of six or more birds. They are found throughout Belize's forests and nest in holes in tree trunks. They are the national bird of Belize and known locally as the "bill bird." This is a fun painting subject and colorful along with its habitat. Your comments are welcome.

Algernon in the Pool - There are some of you in my email group who will remember the early 1970s, my home in Wichita, KS with the swimming pool and our white kittens. To teach them not to be afraid of falling in the pool I would wait until they were about 8 or so weeks old and then pitch them, all the kittens, directly into the middle of the pool. They are surprisingly adept swimmers, but they have to be convinced of that. They would actually follow me to the steps area and learn to get themselves out. From that point on we never worried about them around the water. Algernon was a special kitten.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - The other day I was at the park, as I usually am once a week or so looking for painting subjects, and I saw this little dog. I thought it was a Cocker Spaniel mix, until, I was corrected by the owner. Turns out it's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I stood corrected and took 5 pictures. She sure was cute.....

Russell Baker - Baby - 8x 10 Oil on canvas panel
SOLD TO A RUSSELL'S GROUP email MEMBER
Baby - This painting resembles our female cat "Baby" so much I had to name it after her. She is usually somewhere close to me, keeps me company when I paint, on my lap in front of the TV most ever evening and usually next to my pillow at sometime during the night. We rescued her from the county pound about 15 years ago. She is a real member of the family and, of course, runs the household. Your comments are welcome.

Kitten and the Mouse - I like these little fuzzy animals. They are fun to paint and you can do so much with their faces, bring out their personalities and moods and display them any way you like. I think it helps to be an animal lover. This one was intended to show the kitten's curiosity with something she has never seen before. I can just hear the questions running through her mind. What do you think she is thinking??

Russell Baker - Sulphur Crested Cockatoo - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel
Sold 2/29/2008
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo - This bird was much more difficult to paint than I thought. Showing the delicate crested feathers in shaded tones against a dark background was a real challenge. The birds face was also painted in the shade so I could show some definition and feather highlights.

Russell Baker - The Black Lab - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel
SOLD 2/26/2008
The Black Lab - A couple of months ago I was asked by a client if I ever painted Labradors. I never did answer the question, as I was leery of painting an all black dog and being able to show its features or the warm personality of the animal. Later I did a commission of an all black dog and loved doing it. Today I tried another. I would appreciate your honest comments.

The Keeshond - this was a wonderful project to do as this dog has so much life in its face. Their colors are perfect for emphasizing contrasts, throw in a small amount of color and you are there. In The Powder - For those of you who live near popular sky areas this is probably a familiar sight. If not, you should go see it. We were riding in the alpine gondola at Mammoth Mountain a few years ago at the time an Olympic sky team was practicing there. Sights like this were common all that day. This painting is a composite of the pictures taken on that day.

Russell Baker - Eve - 11 x 14 Oil on canvas panel
COMMISSIONED PAINTING
Eve - A rescued dog whose story has a happy ending, is an 11-month-old ridgeback cross that was rescued from under a house this past Christmas Eve so her rescuers named her Eve. After being starved for five weeks (no water, no food) and surviving on flies, she weighed 22 pounds and was just a day from death. Every bone in her body was visible. Her target weight is 80 to 100 lbs. and today she appears well on her way back to a full recovery and also very happy. The guy pictured with her is a composit picture of my old friend Rick and my neighbor. Your comments are welcome.

The Cat Nap - You can almost her purrrrrrr. If this doesn't relax you, probably nothing will. I wake most mornings about 3:00 AM or so to the sound of our cat purring while laying next to my pillow. I don't know why she pics that time of the morning, but she does. It seems like the rest of the day she sleeps on the sofa and doesn't make a sound. We put up with it because she is such a wonderful and well mannered pet. Since I am awake that early anyway, that's when I usually paint. The Cat Nap

Downhill - I've always said that to learn you have to challenge. You start with a blank white canvas and use lights, darks, different tones and values to achieve something new and exciting. It's not as easy as it looks, but if you study the subject, derive a plan and follow it, you usually end up with an acceptable result. Well, this was a new challenge for me. I had to pay particular attention to the light, after all, snow is usually white and on a clear day the sky is usually blue. I discovered that contrasts were the key to this painting. I would value your opinions so please take the time to let me know what you think...

The Red Parrot - I don't know if red parrots are rare or not, but it sure was hard to find examples to work from. To achieve a bright sunlit look using reds is difficult without it getting pink on you, so after experimenting with different combinations I finally got there, at least I think so. I really won't know until I hear from some you viewers. Please, your comments are always welcome.

Russell Baker - Deep Thinker - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel
SOLD 2/03/2008
Deep Thinker - More than twenty years ago we went to our local pound and adopted a little orange female kitten that was ill and they were going to euthanize. She and her siblings had somehow lost their mother and they were all sick cat respiratory disease. I forget the medical name. I agreed to take her to my vet and resolve her medical issues and they allowed us to take her home. Once cured, she was just like any other little kitten except for the fact that she was overly headstrong, much like a male, so we gave her a male name, called her Fred. Through out her life she lived up to that name.

Sun Conure Parrot - Painting the whole bird is much different than painting just the head. It's harder to show any kind of emotion this way. The Sun Conure can be found naturally in eastern South America, mostly north of the Amazon River, also they were exported to and are now found in Mexico and the Caribbean. Their beautiful coloring makes them highly sought after and their ability to love their human companions adds to their charm. The Sun Conure Parrot.

The Toucan - I've decided to do several of these over time, as there are several different varieties. I like the bright colors and the high contrasts. I purposely blurred the background so the sharp foreground would really stand out, much like taking a picture with a good camera and using a limited depth of field lens setting to amplify interest in the main subject of the photo. Sarah - A neighbor of ours obtained this unknown breed from the local pound several years ago. They do not know the breed they just know they fell in love with it. We believe it is a mix of a Sheltie and some kind of terrier mix. The coloring is definitely Sheltie but the ears indicate something else. She weighs approximately 20 pounds, possibly a bit more. Before I started painting dogs I took a picture of it specifically to use as a subject in the future and finally got around to it today. If anyone has a better idea of the breed or mix we, the owner and myself, would be grateful for a heads up. Your comments are welcomed.

The Peekapoo - I spotted this dog yesterday evening in front of the local grocery store and the owner said it was a Peekapoo, a cross between a Pekingese and a Poodle. The dog's coat almost resembled curly wool and was very thick. I've never seen one before and didn't have my camera at the time so this painting is from memory. Trying to paint a curly wool look was not easy, but it taught me another painting skill so it was well worth the effort. The Peekapoo.

Ladybug & Cat - I love doing animals, especially small animals. In each offering I attempt to show some part or parts of their unique personality. In this one I attempted to show the cats natural curiosity for anything that moves. If you look carefully you can just make out the ladybug reflection in the cats eyes. I remember as a child in northern Minnesota it was very common to hear the gray owl calling out at night. Commission Painting
Completed 01/16/2008

Tippi - Tippi was "evidence" in animal cruelty case (approx. 300 dogs and cats) in southern California. Her rescuer, after having possession of Tippi for less than a month, had to humanely euthanize her due to nerve sheath cancer, a very painful cancer. Tippi was her most heartfelt and painful rescue.
In the cruelty case one perpetrator, a woman, was recently sentenced to 16 months in state prison and another woman was sentenced to 365 days in county jail with five years probation--a condition of which is that she not own any pets or work with any organization devoted to the care, boarding or adoption of animals.
The picture I worked from to create this painting was taken on the day Tippi was laid to sleep. Your comments are always welcome...

Russell Baker - MY FIRST BIRD - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel
Gone in 10 minutes
SOLD 1/04/2008
My First Bird - After painting a number of dogs I was asked if I had ever painted birds. Well, I hadn't done one since I was about 14yrs or so (approximately 50 years ago) and in those days I just sketched, so I thought it was about time I painted one. I gave it a try and I like the way it turned out. I've got more dogs to do and will start another commission dog painting today, but sometime in the near future I'll do some more birds. How about some comments as I like to know how I am progressing........

Russell Baker - Natividad - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel
Commission Painting
Completed 01/11/2008
Natividad - My client tells me that an artist, (yes an artist) paid kids to capture a starving dog off the street. The artist then put the dog in a public art exhibition and refused to unchain it, give it water or give it food. The visitors to the exhibit were eating and drinking right next to the dog as it was chained. I'm sure the dog smelled the food and would have loved some water. Natividad died while on exhibition. The name of the exhibit was on the wall and was made out of dog food of all things. The exhibit was outside the US and for those of you who want to look at the actual exhibit, here is the link:

Angel - Just after her surgery - She Is another rescued dog, weighs 9 pounds and is a 3-year-old spaniel terrier mix.
It is thought that Angel had a wire wrapped around her muzzle for more than 6 weeks. The wounds left by the wire completely encircled Angel's muzzle and were so deep that her teeth were exposed on the side. The wire allowed her to eat, but each time she moved her jaw, it cut even deeper into her skin.
She made a full recovery and was adopted by the family that fostered her following her surgery and treatment.

SOLD
This was a Commission Painting
12/27/2007
Mercy - A pit bull mix was a rescue dog. Mercy was a 10 month-old puppy. The 22-year-old owner stabbed his dog, poured an accelerant on her stomach and set her on fire because she wouldn't mate. She lived for 10 days and showed some improvement. Her condition deteriorated and she was given a plasma transfusion, but shortly afterward, her heart--weakened by burns over 60% of her body, stopped beating. Her abuser was captured and is serving 4 years in prison.

Tibetan Terrier pup - According to legend, the Tibetan Terrier originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet over 2000 years ago. They were raised in the monasteries and were never sold but might be given to someone who had done the lamas a favor or to a visiting dignitary; this association with the monasteries gave them the name Holy Dog of Tibet.

This one took at least twice as long to paint as any other 8 x 10 dog painting I've done, but it was worth it. The extra effort paid off in the result. I really am happy with the way it came out, are you? Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your comments.

I just finished this one this morning so it needs a little drying time.
Siberian Husky - This painting was a real challenge because it was a white dog. I wanted to show the warmth of the animal and its beautiful friendly face, yet the harsh cold conditions of Siberia; difficult to do when everything is white. I hope I achieved it, time will tell. Please comment and let me know what you think..

Russell Baker - The Shih Tzu 11x 14 Oil on canvas panel
SOLD 12/15/2007
The Shih Tzu - I read that they probably originated from mating between Tibetan Lhasa Apso dogs brought to China during the 17th century and native Pekinese dogs. I'm going to try a Pekinese soon, but have to find some good examples to work from first.
If any of you have a provocative photo of a Pekinese, I'd appreciate and email with the pic. Thanks

Lucky the Toy Maltese - We had a friend that would bring a Toy Maltese named "Lucky" to our daily coffee klatch. Lucky had a great personality and just knew he was the cutest thing on 4 legs within 50 miles. Our friend died a while back and besides her, we also really miss Lucky. I could just see him half asleep on that brown leather sofa. So here he is........

Russell Baker - Cobra in Oil - 16 x 20 Oil on stretched canvas
Cobra in Oil - Those who know cars will recognize this and those who don't, probably will not care. In the 60s while living in Wichita, KS I had the pleasure of ride in an original Cobra. They were not common, but there were a few around. They could only be described as brute force with a gas pedal. Now a days I see a replica cobra fairly often and it sounds just like the real thing. The proud owner drives it through the parking lot of our local coffee shop on nice days and every one focuses on it. Once he parked next to my Porsche and I actually felt humbled. There is nothing else like a Cobra. I just finished it today so will not auction it until it dries a little.

Russell Baker - Latte and Carrot Cake 11 x 14 Oil on canvas panel
Latte and Carrot Cake
Well, you can guess where I've been today; the coffee shop. I've spent several afternoons there recently instead of painting as we have beautiful top down weather here and I don't have any schedule to keep. (You may have noticed the lack of posted paintings for the last few days.) I actually had this combination yesterday and it tasted so good that I wanted to share it with all of you. So, here you are - Latte and Carrot Cake - courtesy of Buckthorn's Coffee & Deserts shop, Sacramento, CA

Trees On Ridge - This is painted from another photo I took last year while traveling up highway 1 in northern California. As I mentioned before, it's a photographers and painters paradise. The afternoon sun was out as we traveled north and there was still some leaves changing colors amongst the evergreens. The colorful trees stuck out like fire through the sun colored ground fog and created this scene. If you have never been on this drive before, you should try it in the fall. Trees On Ridge- Let me know what you think please.......

Oregon Coast No. 1
About this time last year, 2006, we took a drive up highway 1 through northern California and Oregon. This route is a photographers and painters paradise for material. The fall of the year is especially good if you like fog and mystic scenes, which I do. I took hundreds of pictures on that trip and have never painted anything from them until today. This picture is of a part of a bay just south of Gold Beach, Oregon. Of course I took a little license, but the day we were there it looked very much like this. The beach sand is formed from volcanic and other rock so it appears gray to black. There were blue skies to the west, fog and clouds around the water and inland. The air was brisk and crisp. After that it was a hot breakfast at a local café just north of there. What a great day.

Russell Baker - BIG SUR TO THE SOUTH - 14 x 11 Oil on stretched canvas

When I first moved to California, about 31 years ago, I had occasion to visit the Big Sur area and had lunch at an open air resturaunt with this view. I've never forgotten it and since have been back several times. Since then I've taken many color pictures of the view, but the day I painted this (8/20/2007) I was in a black and white mood. So here you are "Big Sur to the south" in black and white.

Yellow Calla Lilly No. 2- The picture does not do this one justice at all. It just jumps off the canvas at you. The canvas size is 24in high by 18in wide. The yellow mat (electronically created and NOT for sale with the painting) in this case is approximately 5 inches wide all around and is here as an example only. It makes a prominent statement doesn't? I just love it.

Russell Baker - Yukatat Bay No. 1 - 9x 12 Oil on canvas board $59.00 + $10.00 S & H USA
This is another painting from a photo I took from a cruise ship a couple of years ago at Yukatat bay, Alaska. Yukatat bay is a good distance north and west of Juneau. As we got closer to the glacier itself, icebergs floated in the water, some of them the size of a house. The sun was bright that day and late in the afternoon it was a stellar day for color photography. Some of you are probably also photographers as I am, so you will understand what I mean. You could not have asked for a better day to take pictures.

ALASKA No.1- A couple of years ago we took a cruise ship to Alaska. One day somewhere considerably north of Juneau we cruised into Yukatat bay on our way to get up close and personal with Hubbard glacier, there were huge tufted clouds along with ground fog. The mountains on both sides of the ship got closer and closer as we ventured closer to the glacier. I took many pictures that day and this is a painting of a photo from that day.
